Random thoughts on gang culture and far right ideology: both to me seem to be fruits of a fragile ego— ego being our sense of “I”. All the things we attach to and draw our sense of identity from. When you have a weak sense of identity you are greatly susceptible to latching on to extreme ideologies. It’s kinda like having a weak immune system, you pick up what ever comes instead of filtering out what serves the whole body and what does not. Ultimately, these ideologies are accepted because they fill a gap and I think that gap is linked to the erosion of community and tribe, which creates false unhealthy mutations of tribes. I think the loss of initiation into manhood/womanhood and such traditions manifests in these bastardised ideologies that form these false tribes. I call them false because they ultimately serve the fear in the person but cause harm to the whole. They do not heal the feeling of not belonging but they create illusions of it. The fear of migrants, the fear of other, the need to kill for a postcode, the need to feel superior over someone else is a to feel like “somebody”, it’s a malformed ego.
