This is the skull from the eastern cottontail (Sylvilagus floridanus) my red-tailed hawk caught on Sunday, and that we ate the other night. I used cervical dislocation to dispatch the rabbit, so the skull remained undamaged. The other day I had one crock pot cooking dinner (rabbit stew) and the other one cooking the meat off of the rabbit’s head. The skull will be whitened soon. I included a close-up photo of the upper incisors of the rabbit. Notice that there are four incisors, one set behind the other. This is a lagomorph trait and one of several that differentiate them (rabbits, hares, and pikas) from rodents. -- source link
