uwmspeccoll: Spotlight: A Don Carlos MysteryContinuing our exploration of the large, anonymous gift we’ve been working on this month, we came across this curious publication. We were quite taken by its chromolithographic illustrations that also appear to have hand-painted touch-ups, some of which we display here. The book appears to be a German novelization of Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Don Carlos, and although it has no date, we’re guessing the late 19th century, ca. 1880s, by the quality of the papers used .However, we can find almost no information on the author George F. Born, except that he was the author of Isabella (which was first published in the 1880s), or the Berlin publisher Werner Grosse (or Grotze), or the lithographer H. Oeser, except that they were based in Neusalza, Germany. We no longer have access to OCLC First Search and Worldcat is the pits, but if we are to trust it, there appears to be no OCLC record for this publication (but we don’t trust it, so who knows). If anyone can help us solve this mystery, we’d appreciate it! -- source link
