victoronyurionice: happyhanabi:lookiamnotcreative: I’m still not very coherent atm so this may not be the best idea, but can I talk about this moment a little? The impromptu quad flip has to be right up there with THAT and KIKUNA as my favourite things about this episode and it just tickles so many of my narrative favs. The quad flip is Victor’s signature move. Unlike Chris’ quad lutz, which Victor can also do, this is implied to be a thing that Victor alone can do in the entire world. It’s the thing that sets him apart from the rest of the skating world, a stupidly difficult move that’s part of what elevates him to skating god status. And then Yuuri goes ahead and pulls off an impromptu one in the middle of a competition, just because he wants to see the look on Victor’s face. He doesn’t do it for points and winning (it’s better if he lands a perfect 4T for that), everyone else thought about winning to some degree, but Yuuri doesn’t, he does it entirely for Victor, and because he wants to, not even because it’s something Victor wants. Skating for his most important person in the world is the only thing on his mind at that point. (Granted, that’s old hat by now but the difference between doing Eros for your beloved and doing a freaking quad flip for him, man.)And in effect, by removing one by one the factors that makes Victor a god of the divine (skating) form, he’s became not only the one man who stole Victor from the world, but also the one person on Earth who managed to turn the god of skating into an ordinary man, no different from him. Uncurse the emperor from his lonely throne. Turn the god into a man who can walk together with him and stay beside him and never leave. We’ve been seeing it built up for a while in various aspects of their personal lives, but this time they extended it to the skating and it’s brilliant and heartwarming and makes me feel wibbly all over. It’s like watching a fairytale! I made an unholy noise only eclipsed by the noise I made with THAT, tbh.(Also compare & contrast with Chris’…..’rivalry’ with Victor, it looks the same but it’s entirely different—that one is aggressive, aiming to drag the god from his throne and replace himself in it while keeping said god chained to the ice for personal gratification. Yuuri’s quad flip is him walking up there and showing that he doesn’t have to stay there, it is no longer a throne, and whatever it turns into he will be there together with Victor. SERIOUSLY THESE TWO. CALL ME LOOKING TOO MUCH INTO IT I DON’T CARE LET ME HAVE MY WIBBLE.) The thing that still kills me – ABSOLUTELY SLAYS ME DEAD – is that Yuuri deliberately sabotaged his own routine to get a reaction out of Victor. He probably would have scored higher if he’d gone with the safer jump! But he was happy with silver because showing off for Victor was more important.BRB, need to go have another good cry over this stupid show. ( T o T ) It’s crazy because IRL, skaters don’t just change their type of jump that spontaneously. You’ll often see skaters adjust the number of rotations in their jump (for example, changing a quad to a triple to make it a bit easier for them as it’s much better to land a triple than fall on a quad) or if they miss a combination jump, they’ll add it in later in the programme. These adjustments aren’t easy by any means, but usually they will have practiced different variations of their programmes, so they will have had practice with these adjustments before. But to change a 4T to a 4F so suddenly? Something that Yuuri probably hasn’t practiced before by the sounds of it…it’s insane. The entry of the jump is completely different, and the chance of injury is incredibly high, but he clearly had one thing on his mind when attempting the 4F and that was Victor. Not only did he risk a low score in the competition, but he also put his whole body and career at risk by attempting this incredibly difficult jump. But he did it because he’s so stupidly in love with Victor and I- The love they have for each other <3 I’m pretty sure Victor wasn’t the only person who could land the quad flip at that point… But because he was likely the first to do it and one of the only people who could land it perfectly, it became his signature jump. So the point still stands. Like, Yuzuru Hanyu was the first person to land the quad loop, but he’s not the only person who’s done it- Shoma, Nathan, and Daniel Grassl have also landed that jump- and yet it was still considered his signature move before he started gaining on the elusive quad axel. -- source link
