Lingonberries are picked in the wild and used to accompany a variety of dishes in Northern Baltoscandia. Commercial cultivation is undertaken in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. Vaccinium vitis-idaea is most commonly known in English as lingonberry or cowberry. The name lingonberry originates from the Swedish name lingon for the species, and is derived from the Norse lyngr, or heather. Vaccinium vitis-idaea keeps its leaves all winter even in the coldest years, unusual for a broad-leaved plant, though in its natural habitat it is usually protected from severe cold by snow cover. It is extremely hardy, tolerating temperatures as low as −40 °C (−40 °F) or lower, but grows poorly where summers are hot. It prefers some shade (as from a forest canopy) and constantly moist, acidic soil. Nutrient-poor soils are tolerated but not alkaline soils. The berries are quite tart, so they are often cooked and sweetened before eating in the form of lingonberry jam, compote, juice, smoothie or syrup. In Sweden and Russia, when sugar was still a luxury item, the berries were usually preserved simply by putting them whole into bottles of water. This was known as vattlingon (watered lingonberries); the procedure preserved them until next season.” Improves vascular health *see research link 26024018 Anti-diabetes properties (excerpt from research:” The plant extract significantly decreased glycemia and strongly tended to decrease insulin levels “) *see research link 25013446 & 19927274 Potent Antioxidant ( excerpt from research:” Lingonberries contain potent free radical scavenging activities for DPPH*, ROO*, *OH, and O2*- radicals. “) * see research link 21370878 & 15826073 & /19788243 Has potent properties to relieve auto-immune diseases because it inhibits TNF-α (Excerpt from research:” Lingonberry phenolics had no significant effect on IL-1β production but inhibited IL-6 and TNF-α production at a concentration of 100 μg/mL “) * see also research /21370878 Antibacterial & antifungal against two periodental bacteria Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia and jelly/marmalade fungi. Save that jelly with Lingonberry ;) (Excerpt from research:” The results of this study demonstrate that these concentrates were able to inhibit growth of visible colonies of xerophilic and non-xerophilic fungi. Cranberry and lingonberry concentrates are interesting candidates for natural preservation against fungal growth in sugar reduced fruit spreads “) *see research link 11273014 & 25868124 Anti-cancer & anti Leukemia properties ( (Excerpt from research:” Lingonberry extract also induced the apoptosis of human leukemia HL-60 cells in a dose-independent manner. These results suggest that ERK1, ERK2, and MEK1/2 may be the primary targets of lingonberry that result in suppression of AP-1, NF-kappaB, and neoplastic transformation in JB6 P(+) cells and causes cancer cell death by an apoptotic mechanism in human leukemia HL-60 cells. “) *see research link 15826073 & the wiki link Anti-UTI’s (Excerpt from research:” We analysed two popular European vitis-idaea products, a mother juice and a proprietary extract. Both preparations may be appropriate to confirm the Vaccinium urinary tract infection-preventive effect beyond doubt.”) *see research link 23922238 Contains a compound “quercetin-3-O-alpha-arabinofuranoside” that suppresses lipid uptake = weight loss properties *see research link 17177509 Research on Lingonberries: Keep reading -- source link
