hoanbee: Since the early 1980s Japanese labels such as Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto or Comme des Garçons, founded by Rei Kawakubo, have been seen as important protagonists in the international fashion industry. Known as the ‘Big Three’, in their collections these designers make clear references to Japan’s rich tradition of handcraft, which they employ using an unmistakable formal language essentially characterised by folds, layers and asymmetrical patterns. They generally avoid pomp or display and favor simplicity, which led them to the decision to present only prêt-à-porter collections. The exhibition ’The Empire of Folds – Fashion and Textile Art from Japan’ at the Museum Bellerive in Zurich, Switzerland, brings together a selection of around one hundred models by famous Japanese fashion designers from between 1975 and 2013 which come from the collection of the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg and from the applied art collection of the Museum für Gestaltung Zurich.
