oberlincollegelibraries:Xīn Nián Kuài Lè! Happy Chinese New Year!We are starting the celebrations a day early by sharing some items from Special Collections’ Chinese materials. The top image is actually from a lacquered Japanese woodblock of a Chinese text. It was published in Kyoto in the 19th-century: “Scripture of Juzō and Long Life,” and this page features an ox rushing in, a fitting analogy for the incoming year of the metal ox.Looking ahead to spring we are also including some beautiful colored woodblocks of flowers from the Painting Manual of the Mustard Seed Garden, originally compiled in the 17th-century, with some volumes dating from the 18th- and early 19th-centuries as well.
