I got asked how I approach my visual development workflow for characters: So what I like doing is finding a reference of a person that intrigues me, usually someone who has unique features or imperfections. I then do a few studies of that person, in this case mostly the face, and see what interests me, which bump in the face it is that gets a certain look and what happens if i exaggerate certain features. Usually those sketches will turn out pretty “ugly”, since I am focusing on the imperfections and asymmetrical features. Since it would be harder to identify with this kind of character, in this case especially with the stern attitude of the study, I create “boiled down” design where I try to make those features as appealing as I can. If I would start with the right image first, the appealing girl, then I would end up with a pretty, but generic character without much uniqueness or personality. If i left the design as it is in the study phase, it would be harder for an audience to identify with her and root for her. -- source link
