I’d originally intended to go here, the Bock Casemates, first, but I happened to pass by the elevator down to the Grund first, and decided to go there first in case it I couldn’t find it again. There are several walkways that connect the two levels as well; at first it seemed like a maze but by the end of the day I knew my way around pretty well. So I wandered past some old fortifications on the opposite side of the Grund, caught the tail end of an informational video playing for an audience of one (besides me), then weaved my way past the abbey garden in the shadow of the Bock Casemates. The Bock Casemates are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the reason Luxembourg was known as the Gibraltar of the North. It’s a fortress within a cliff, an underground defense system first built in the mid-17th century under Spanish rule (as you come to realize during your time here, Luxembourg has been “possessed” by almost every other European country at some point). Today, you can wander around the underground passages and glimpse out the cannon loopholes for really pretty views. -- source link
