I took a wander around Ghent today and I covered a lot more territory than I thought I would. It turns out that the city is more compact than it seems. There’s the three towers of St. Bavo’s Cathedral, the Belfry and St. Nicholas’ Church. Then the historic buildings along the canal at Graslei. Journey a bit farther and you’re in Patershol, a medieval part of the city where the alleys are now filled with restaurants. And nearby you can walk along the flower-lined Lieve canal. Throughout the entire city you’ll continuously happen upon random street art, music or quirky little shops, which gives this city more personality than I was expecting. Apparently it’s also home to quite the hipster scene according to my AirBnB host (he talked about hipsters in the third person, but I’m pretty sure he’s one, so I guess he would know). I saw a few people kayaking along a canal today and I thought about trying to fit it in tomorrow, but I think I’d rather leave earlier and have more time in Luxembourg. Overall Ghent is a great city for a 1-day wander, though. It also has a Primark, and although I told myself no clothes shopping on this trip, I couldn’t resist its pull… but I limited myself to purchasing one thing. Luckily the place was the busiest, nuttiest Primark I’ve ever seen (which is saying something) so I didn’t last long ;) -- source link
