Similar because he had already described in his work, its squalid and excruciating modalities, dissimilar because he was not one of his characters, but a central figure in our culture, a poet who had marked an era, a brilliant director, a inexhaustible essayist.”- Alberto MoraviaPier Paolo Pasolini was an Italian filmmaker, poet, novelist, and philosopher. From some of the very first words he put to paper, to the first few images he filmed on celluloid, Pasolini sparked controversy. Writing and directing works of art that dared to challenge the social, political, religious, and most prominently sexual norms of the time, and even still today. It was almost inevitable the way it happened. Pasolini and his understanding, and appreciation, and love in the perverse and morbid side of life, like a star-crossed lover destined for the most unfortunate end.On November 2, 1975, Pasolini’s mutilated corpse was discovered on a small beach in Ostia of Rome, Italy. He had been savagely beaten and then lit on fire. Various bones in his body had been broken and his liver covered in numerous lacerations. His chest was caved in, an ear nearly ripped from his head, and his testicles had been crushed. He had also been run over by his own car, an Alfa Romeo. A couple of hours before this discovery a boy was stopped and arrested for speeding in an Alfa Romeo. The boy is Giuseppe Pelosi, a seventeen year old boy Pasolini had picked up the night before for sex. He confesses to the murder of Pasolini. According to Pelosi’s confession Pasolini picked him up and paid him immediately. They then stopped for dinner at a cheap restaurant Pasolini knew well. Pelosi had spaghetti with oil while Pasolini sat across from him drinking only a beer. After dinner the two begin driving again and pulled over and parked sometime later in Ostia. They begin talking and Pasolini becomes aggressive threatening to sodomize Pelosi with a wooden stick. The two become violent and in the ensuing fight, Pelosi beats Pasolini to death. Forty years later this confession is mostly disregarded and many theories exist as to what actually happened that night. The death of Pier Pasolini remains shrouded in a certain tragic mystique. “It is not my mode of thought that has caused my misfortunes, but the mode of thought of others.”- Marquis de SadePier Paolo Pasolini 1922-1975 -- source link
