vampirtulpe: A youtuber is holding a contest where you design your own CO and it was nowhere in the rules that I couldn’t show it off before, so here, I gave Jess a lesbian to hang out with, using one of my already existing oc’s and changing her up a bit ^^ Yeah, all I was going to do was comment on game dialogue from the other post but I saw this and I can’t ignore it.Advance Wars has WW2 aesthetics and missiles but naming a CO Power after the nuclear bomb that devastated Nagasaki would be like naming a CO Power “Holocaust” or “Pearl Harbor” or “Nanking”.Not only is that name in poor taste, it just doesn’t fit the generally cartoony wars aesthetic or naming convention of the games at all.The canon game that comes closes is Grimm’s CO Power named “Kamikaze Break” in Japanese but that got changed to “Knuckleduster” because while it might fit Grimm’s high attack, low defense “suicidal” tactics; actual references to the suicide bombers wouldn’t fly. The Japanese could make reference the Kamikaze Divine Wind since it follows the aesthetics of the Yellow Comet men having Japanese-based attack names. There’s also the fact Advance Wars was originally developed by Japanese game company so they can reference their own history.Even then there’s a level of distance (Break comes from the equivalent of Power so it’s like Kamikaze Power) and reference to history (“one of the primary values in the samurai life and the Bushido code was loyalty and honor until death”) than just dropping the name of the specific weapon has caused millions of civilians’ death and lasting years of tragedy. Sturm dropping meteors, Von Bolt sucking the land dry, and, yes, even Caulder dropping bombs may have in-universe suffering but they still have a fantasy flavor–a distance from, again, in real life, tragedy.Because this is a still a war game, there’s still lots references to be death, torture, and suffering but there’s still distance. It’s Koal’s “Forced March” not “Death March”; “Trail of Woe”, not “Trail of Tears”. Caulder’s weapon is referred to as “The Great Owl”, not “Little Boy”.Why would a Green Earth CO have even have American/Russian nuclear bomb names? Drake has Tsunami but that’s a Japanese word that’s been adopted in general English usage. She’s also an explosives expert, not a mad scientist like Lash (whose CO powers isn’t built around her mad science but terrain and tactics instead). If anything, her CO powers should be themed after specific bombs/weapons, not nuclear ones. In fact, the best and most dangeous gun in WW2 was made in the Germany–the 88mm. It’s antiaircraft and antitank and obviously deadly to infantry. It fits the image of the spread damage CO power. Slap on a fantasy version of that kind of gun and give it a cartoony makeover like Rachel’s Covering Fire. See how’s Rachel bomb-focused CO Power that is named after a military term and not attached to very specific tragedies.Imagine if Kindle’s CO Power was named “Holocaust” instead of “Urban Blight”. She’s a fire-themed CO, she uses buildings, and ovens were a thing used in WW2. Why not? Because choosing those names is not some cool and badass reference, it’s evoking tragedies and brutal suffering. It says nothing about the history of the real events nor does it add any meaningful to the character, except maybe to say “wow how edgy”.Also, the “war ending bomb” as the normal CO power. Seriously? This is also very low on complaints but why use the code name “Fat Man” but not the code name for Tsar Bomba “Ivan” or “Vanya”. It doesn’t fit thematically. Tsar Bomba maybe the most powerful nuclear bomb but it was never used for warfare. I also feel this way of about anything using Death March as slang for being overworked in the Japanese language. Doesn’t make it any better, in my opinion.I even searched “Death March Japanese” and the first results on Google are the Bataan Death March. This kind of thing is so very tasteless. Those CO Power names are just bad and thoughtless on too many levels. -- source link
