They have to open and close their mouth in order to adjust awkward food, so they eat plants in small bites to avoid dropping food all over themselves. Their saliva has a slightly higher acidity than a humans and can break down cellulose before they swallow. The hook-shaped teeth are for keeping their prey still while they swallow it.
