artocello:Adam Driver #78Adam, wearing the Denim Shirt of 2021, a brilliant snaggle-toothed grin scrunching his nose, squinching his eyes, crinkling his crow’s feet, and rumpling his dimples. This man is an ambassador for Breitling watches, is playing Maurizio Gucci, has just been announced as the face of Burberry’s new fragrance… and he loves his 3 different colored versions of that denim shirt very much. Bless his cotton socks. Adam was captured in Ohio in mid-June, wearing one of those trademark shirts and this remarkably infectious grin. I love the way the crinkles on his nose run right up to the inner corner of his eye; the biggest connects straight to his upper eyelid. And the dimples! With a regular wattage smile I can usually count up to three, but with the combination of this lighting and the sheer force of his amusement I get to 5 before my brain shorts out from the adorable. A smile this intense also bends the flexible tip of his nose, the muscles connected to the edge of his nostrils pulling up and back, creating those dimples and curving the bridge. The only part of his face to remain unrumpled is his forehead; it’s completely relaxed, which suggests to me that he’s not holding emotional tension, he’s just happy. It’s a delight to see, and even better to paint. I couldn’t help but grin back at him.Adam’s been wearing denim shirts a lot this year, a fact that did not go unnoticed as we began to see photos of him again after the Driver Drought of 2020. It seems like every time we see him out of costume he’s wearing a light blue denim shirt, black trousers, and sneakers; I laud his practicality and thrift, even as I’m amused by it. You might think this would change amidst the spectacle of the Cannes Film Festival, but apparently the wardrobe he had for this interview was a preview of his look for most of his stay in France. The basic sufficiency of Adam’s wardrobe continued the day before the premiere as he gave his first interviews after almost 18 months while wearing a plain white pocket t-shirt that could have been bought anywhere. The casual chic trend continued the next day at the photocall, where Adam showed up in yet another untucked dark blue denim shirt under a black sport coat, jeans, and sneakers. Most of the rest of the cast were similarly informal, so it wasn’t jarring, but I am still so amused by the choice of that particular style of shirt. He was dressed absolutely to the nines for that premiere though, looming over the rest of the cast in a gorgeous black tux ensemble that beautifully showcased just how large he is right now for his role as Jack Gladney. And while I would have loved it if he had stayed, had some fun with the mad crew that made that crazy movie a reality, and answered some questions at the panel the next morning, I understand that the red carpet/promotion aspect of making a movie is his least favorite part. Instead, I’m thankful for the glimpses of him we had, and am choosing to be glad that he went straight back to his happiest place, the thing he loves to do more than anything else, and the reason he was at that premiere in the first place: acting. What do you want to bet he wore a denim shirt on the plane trip home?Photo used for reference was taken by Daniel Shea on 16 Jun 2021 for an article published on 1 Jul 2021 in the Cannes edition of “M, le Magazine du Monde”.Probably about 7 hours of drawing time. There was a lot of fussing with gradient maps and overlays and some last minute changes to my approach to the color on this one. -- source link
