Hiraeth Creature #1181 - Ennuhul“When the Earthen Maiden, Hiraeth’s first true spirit, rose to shape the world, she also created five children of stone to help her in this monumental task. They became known as the Mountain Princes, each designated to watch over a different section of Hiraeth: north, east, south, west, and central Hiraeth. Though each were instrumental in forging the world we know today, it was the Eastern Prince who helped shape the balance of Hiraeth like no other. From a great sanctum, they descended into the Undercroft tunnels and weaved together the leylines, which would forever anchor Hiraeth’s magic in a controlled and healthy manner. Magic was channeled in a way that would allow creatures and folk to manipulate it to their will, but within limitations that would keep the realm serene and sane. Hiraeth was not meant to be as wild as the Fae or Deep Realm, where life was defined by chaos and malleability. The creation of the leylines was not to chain Hiraeth, but to tether her together to keep her faultless and unified. While leylines spread like roots across Hiraeth, their heart is within the Mystic Veil. Seen as the heart of the world’s magic, it is warded over by the Ennuhul– creatures who slowly crawl across the branches of the leylines and the tunnels they rest in, wary of all things who would interfere with flow of Hiraeth’s magic. They seem like mundane and lethargic creatures, but their position as custodian to the world’s magic has made them quite powerful over the generations. They spend most of their time grazing on flora to prevent overgrowth from blocking the leyline system, as well as using their powerful head, neck and tail to clear debris, be it fallen rocks, soil, or ruins. They only use their powers when malicious forces enter leyline passages looking to damage the flow of magic. While Ennuhul have access to many spells, their primary strategy is to breathe out arcane powder which paralyzes their foes and then call for earth elementals to make a final judgement on any interlopers. Common folk who enter the passages are often left to their own devices, as there is little a normal person can do to interfere with the leylines.Ennuhul are very calm and collected creatures: said to be well-spoken and knowledgable in all fields of magic, they can make for benevolent teachers for those who are patient in kind, willing to listen to their meandering stories. Ennuhul have a history in eastern society as scholars who offer wisdom to those who seek it. It is believed the Ennuhul were first born during Hiraeth’s spiritual awakening, and are amongst the oldest beasts in the world. From their time working for spirits for countless generations, they have a unique outlook on the world and the workings of magic that keen magic-users should seek to hear.
