Hiraeth Creature #1173 - Teeratux“The abundance of potent and lush magic has drawn many creatures to the Great Betwixt, the ravine which spans the length of the known world. Animals that were once mundane or on the brink of survival have found a new ways to flourish thanks to the nurturing magic of the Betwixt. The immense energy flowing through this place is known to breed new species out of old ones, gently morphing them into something new. Among these species, rising up from forgotten Undercroft oceans, are the Teeratux. A strain of creatures that were once microscopic in size, they now are clearly visible to the naked eye, their tails often growing longer than river boats. These Teeratux were born from a small population of curious individuals, otherwise the Betwixt would be completely overrun with the wily beasts. With great influxes of magic able to alter a creature so wildly, many see this phenomenon as spontaneous evolution and consider the products of it a new species.Teeratux are able to thrive in water and burrowing through sand, traversing both to nibble on water flora and fungi that flourish tremendously in the Betwixt. As they move, they create a whistling hum from their shining carapace: slow movements sound like a subtle chime, while sudden bursts of speed create a strange, but pleasant, ringing tune. When met with threats, the lash of their long, barbed tail can sound like a ghostly shriek as it cuts through the air. The tail of a Teeratux is a vorpal weapon, strong enough to pierce through nearly any hide or metal. The warped-looking blade that tips the tail can grow and retract depending on the Teeratux’s whims. If they wish to keep threats at a distance, the blade can shoot forward at incredible lengths, or if they are sparring with a much larger creature, their blade may grow massive in size. It’s nearly impossible to contend with a Teeratux in a duel, as even if the blade is broken or the whole tail is severed, a replacement will grow instantly. Thankfully, Teeratux have no qualms with travellers unless threatened first. Some travellers, stumbling upon Teeratux tails loose in the Betwixt from past conflicts, have taken them to use as weapons. It is said that they barely need to be maintained to stay deadly, and that they can still be manipulated by the holder’s impulses, similar to how the Teeratux themselves use them. They are a favoured weapon of witches who have moved into the Betwixt, enchanting them with additional elements to increase their deadliness. From such humble beginnings as a beast we could barely see, it is both awe-inspiring and somewhat daunting to see how magic can affect a species.” -- source link
