Hiraeth Creature #1167 - Sthrenook“The mountain ranges across Hiraeth are considered sacred, hallowed places— stairways to the firmament where the Moon Goddess resides, where folk of all cultures and creeds walk together in harmony. The plentiful amount of wind spirits who make their roosts in the cloudy wilds and take flight at the highest summits also add to the sanctity of a mountain range. It is said the higher one climbs, the clearer the songs sung by the wind can be heard, their ethereal voices echoing in the atmosphere. Among these voices is a more bestial cry, both sonorous but still melodic. These cries have both lured expeditions in and caused enough alarm to turn adventurers away in fear. The source of these cries is a troop of Sthrenooks, their agile nature often rendering them unseen as they sing and play with wind spirits. Sthrenooks dash and leap with incredible speed, and stand well over the height of most travellers, making them seem imposing, but they are actually quite gentle creatures, only fearsome if purposefully provoked. Sthrenooks have a wide range over Hiraeth, living in central, eastern, and southern ridges. Bearing an odd headcrest and a long throat pouch, they can carry large amount of air with them, making their calls incredibly resonant and giving them an elaborate musical vocabulary amongst each other. This ability to store massive amounts of air also lets them make move about in extraordinary ways and to impressive heights without having to stop for breaks. Very few creatures can keep up or catch a wary Sthrenook, their hunters having to rely purely on ambush. From birth, they have a heightened connection to wind spirits, who fly down to give them extra bursts of speed or height when sung out to. When truly faced with a threat, they have been known to channel their storage of air to shoot out a massive blast of wind at their foe from their mouth, though only as a last resort. Sthrenooks can gain a variety of powers via their breath depending on what they eat, though these have been rarely witnessed as they always prefer to bound away from danger. With a diet of mountain herbs and fish, they can gain temporary but potent abilities, such as breathing out rolling mist to help cover their escapes, or even blasts of fire if they indulge in spicier flora. Competition among troops can get fierce near winter as they try to stock up on certain herbs before they become inaccessible by snow and ice. When faced with an encroaching group, what results is a fierce and wild singing competition, powerful enough to rattle the mountainside.” -- source link
