Hiraeth Creature #1166 - Wrathgrown“Hiraeth is a land sustained by balance in all things. Though much of the land appears tranquil, there are always battles happening far away from the eyes of common folk. Hiraeth is home to many monsters who rumble the earth and air as they battle far away from any spectators. Generations ago, when the giants rallied under the Ravenous Beast, many probably hoped that the ill-tidings from the west would dissolve into similar fleeting thoughts— just a couple animals raging in some far-off forest. By the time the world realized how much chaos had erupted, there was little way to feesibly halt the March. Many rode out to the golden forests of the western frontier, and many never returned, and the Giant’s March was free to rampage as it pleased. Among the warriors who went to face the March were the druidic knights, masters of both arms and elements. They hoped their ability to commune with nature would give them edge to calming the giants, but they had not realized how powerful their bewitchment was, no voice able to pierce the overwhelming howls of the Ravenous Beast who claimed them as soldiers. Many of the druidic knights fell in the western woods, whatever wards they had left tasked with maintaining their legacy. The weapons of all manner of warriors are placed into the earth of western Hiraeth, acting as gravestones for all those who could not be recovered. The spots where druidic knights are said to have fallen are said to sometimes overtaken in an explosion of violent wind and flora, birthing a beast known as a Wrathgrown. Wrathgrown are not the souls or ghosts of druids, but are believed to be created by the residual power they have left behind. They whisk through the air as an amorphous bundle of leaves before taking a more tangible form to run and fight as a beast would. They indulge in duels with other large and aggressive creatures, never taking a life as prey but living for the thrill of battle. Wrathgrown are filled to the brim with energy, it often taking days before they feel the need to rest. They command wind and lighting, bursting it outwards from their bodies, sometimes igniting themselves in a brilliant display of fire before quickly buffeting it away. Their nebulous nature makes them nearly impossible to pin down, and allows them to hound after malevolent spirits who enter their woods. Thankfully Wrathgrown bare no ill-will to travellers, but if they detect powerful magic from them they may challenge them to a fight for their own amusment. While these confrontations aren’t lethal, they are far from effortless affairs.” -- source link
