Hiraeth Creature #1157 - Vaistygra“Acting as the anchorpoint for the world’s ley lines, eastern Hiraeth is draped in potent magic, affecting the flora and fauna. It is often referred to as “the Mystic Veil” because of how magic has played a part in shaping the environment, as well as for the layers of mist and cloud that shroud the land. Together, these elements create a whimsical and unnerving place, where the surreal nature of the Fae Realm and primal foundations of Hiraeth perfectly intertwine. A beast who embodies this strangeness is the Vaistygra— a being always between corporeal and phantasmal. They were said to be kin to proper animals once, but their bodies began to change after devouring countless interlopers into their territory— be they soldiers, rangers, travellers, or lost villagers. Vaistygra are a counterpoint to much of eastern tradition, which was often very bonded with nature. Records of eastern townships and cities speak of how folk and animals lived in harmony and powerful beasts were revered. The Vaistygra seems in opposition of this cohabitation, remaining in far-off wilds and preying on folk as it pleased, going as far as to consuming their souls.Despite this aggression, the eastern folk did not view Vaistygra with blind hate. Their views were not as soft or naive, and they were well aware of the dangers lurking in the deep wilderness. There are tales that speak of warriors and priests working together to excise Vaistygra, to end the terror they beset on villages as well as to free the souls within them. Vaistygra struck at twilight and dawn hours, shifting between the shadows cast by the Sun, avoiding the gaze of the Moon Goddess who would seek to put their raging souls to sleep if she saw them. From their being, they emit a cold and windy aura which they can whirl into an brumal storm, slashing through skin and freezing down to the bone. Their claws and horns phase through any mundane material, making physical defences impractical against them. Magical abilities are usually the best counter to a Vaistygra, especially arcane or lightning based magic, which can overload and dissipate their already heavily imbued bodies. Their true weakness is celestial magic, which cleaves through them with ease, and is historically the most dependable magic when facing those who linger beyond death. While many seek to rout these creatures, some actually seek them for guidance. A long-lost group of monks built shrines dedicated to Vaistygra and were said to commune with them, as they held all the knowledge and spoke with all the voices of the souls within them. Despite their hostility and antagonistic relationship with the eastern folk, Vaistygra view them with a warrior’s respect and are quite affable, willing to converse under the right circumstances. Vaistygra claim that the souls within them are at peace, as they share in all thrills and delights from their hunts, though there is no way to confirm this without becoming a meal for the ghostly creature.” -- source link
