Hiraeth Creature #1153 - Script Wing“Hiraeth will forever be tangled in mysteries, and while explorers and scholars do their best to amass what’s been lost, one needs to come to terms that not everything can be recovered. Speculation and thoughtful musings are a part of a healthy mind; grasping how little one could ever know in their lifetime could be seen as liberating rather than as a condemnation. These enigmas add to Hiraeth’s mystique, and one of these riddles is stitched across silk wings, quickly and elegantly soaring cloudy mountain summits. Dubbed as Script Wings for the unknown patterns that mark their pinions, they are a rare and forlorn sight. They have been reported in many different colours with different markings on each one’s wings. Many assume they are some kind of wind spirit, and while this assumption is correct, there is more to their story than one could guess. Spirits take on a wide variety of forms based on power, ability, and tasks performed, but the Script Wing is not a form one could choose. They are reminiscent to folk-made vessels: it is a craft known throughout historical accounts that those of immense magical and artisanal arts have created sacred shells for spirits to inhabit when their bodies become too weakened. Powerful spirits too resilient to pass on but too injured to move will forever rest where they have fallen, but when given an appropriately made vessel, they will be able to meld with it and continue to toil in the corporeal world. Many spirits injured during the Giant’s March were given vessels by sympathetic devotees or cults who sought to harness their power for their own gains. Script Wings are very much a part of this phenomenon, but no one can accurately say who crafted them. While their body, mane, and mask seem very much a part of some kind of primal rite, their wings and tail are made from an odd silk. This form of soul-swaddling cloth has been seen throughout different creatures, often associated with witchcraft and what little records there are of the flying islands. It is believed that there are cities sculpted inside the interior of Hiraeth’s highest mountains that could have been linked to the culture of the flying islands, but no one has been able to adequately explore these places. If Hiraeth’s past has been made hazy by the Giant’s March, then the past of the flying islands seems like a whole other world that can hardly be grasped. Regardless of who made the vessel and the uneasy feelings they often inspire, the Script Wings seem to act as any other wind spirit would. The best chance of seeing one is when the Moon Goddess makes her rounds over the land, as she accepts all manner of beings to travel with her without judgement.” -- source link
