Chennamma the queen of Kittur.Kittur as princely state (in present-day Karnataka). She married Raja Mallasarja when she was 15. The raja died in 1816, and her only son died in 1824. She then, adopted Shivalingappa, making him the official heir. The British refused to accept Shivalingappa as heir, and instead brought Kittur under their administration. They wanted Shivalingappa expelled from the state. Rani Chennamma defied the order, and the British attacked. There were two battles. Despite being outnumbered by the British forces, Kittur won the first one. Kittur took prisoners of war, who were released on the promise that there would be no more war. The British, however, had no intention of keeping their promise. They returned to attack Kittur once again. Chennamma and her forces fought valiantly, but she was betrayed by a few people in her inner circle and was defeated. She was taken prisoner, and died in captivity, five years later. -- source link
