raw-fed-pets: Choosing a healthy cat food can be difficult when faced with clever advertising by pet food companies. Here are the most biologically appropriate diets from best to worst: 1) Prey Model Raw. Based on whole prey, which is what cats have evolved on and eaten up until the past few decades. Their digestive system hasn’t changed since the invention of kibble. Only their diet has changed. Watch this short video. 2) Commercial Raw. This list is for dogs but usually the same company will make raw cat food too. 3) Grain-free low carbohydrate canned. This has appropriate moisture levels for a cat. Read reviews and learn about the best ingredients for your cat. 4) Dry kibble. Aim to completely eliminate this from your cats diet where possible. Dry food is generally much higher in carbohydrates than canned food. The water content of kibble is only 10%, the natural prey of your cat is 70% water. Cats have a low thirst drive and do not drink enough water to compensate for dry food (even if it looks like they drink enough). This results in UTI’s, crystals, and all too often eventual renal failure (irreversible). Hopefully this was of use to someone (and their cat). -- source link
