wokeculture: The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women of Canada by Stefania. The United States, particularly the South, has an extensive history of racism against persons of colour. Canadians are widely perceived as overly-polite and considerate people, but we have our own share of destructive racism- specifically against Indigenous people. Between 1980 and 2012, over 1,000 Indigenous women were murdered and as of November 2013, over 100 remain missing. Regardless of personal bias, the atrocities committed against Indigenous women should be recognized and acted upon by the Canadian government and all Canadian citizens. Not only are there flaws in the government concerning these issues, but the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) – essentially the Canadian equivalent for the FBI – has been known to only consider cases proven to be homicidal in statistics. This means that the numbers that are released to the public concerning violence against Indigenous women are only a fraction of what they should be. Also among the RCMP’s errors is their inherent tendency to overlook violence against Aboriginal people and not conduct a full and thorough investigation. Furthermore, there are issues of Aboriginal victims not having been properly identified and therefore being classified as non-Indigenous. This is a demonstration of both Canadian racism and of the RCMP’s incompetence. With Justin Trudeau’s recent election, there have been promises made to improve the situation. In an interview for CBC, Trudeau stated that “Indigenous Lives Matter” and that he is currently in the process of an inquiry concerning the missing and murdered Aboriginal women. As of 2010, though, Indigenous women are three times more likely to become victims of violence than non-Indigenous women. Aboriginal women are still disappearing and either turning up dead or not turning up at all. Likely the primary reason for the delayed investigation is police apathy, but so far Trudeau has kept election promises, and we remain hopeful that this one is likewise kept. -- source link
