wokeculture: Why Millennials Need to Be Voting by Katherine. Millennials often seem to possess this exact conviction: “we didn’t vote because it won’t make a difference”. However, this mentality couldn’t be more untrue. Statistics show that millennials, those who are defined by the Census Bureau to be those who were born between 1980-2000, have the lowest turnout rate in the country in both primaries and elections, with some states having less than 10% of eligible voters participate in its primaries. With these low numbers, it would make more sense if millennials made up a small portion of the United States’s population- but this isn’t the case at all. On the contrary, millennials, with an estimated population of 83.1 million, now outnumber baby boomers. Then why is it that millennials, a generation that dominates the world of online activism, simply aren’t voting? To be frank, it isn’t clear. Some argue that there simply is a lack of interest, which I, personally, find hard to believe- passionate teenagers and young adults can be found in every corner of the Internet and on every social media platform, urging awareness and discussing political, social, and global issues. Whatever the reason, it comes down to the fact that the needs of millennials are often disregarded by politicians for the needs of older generations- those who actively participate in voting. And it makes sense- politicians don’t feel the need to cater to those who aren’t actively making a voice for themselves by voting. But when millennials do go out and vote, and display the true meaning of strength in numbers, politicians are forced to pay attention. During the New Hampshire primaries earlier this month, 83% of millennial voters voted for Bernie Sanders, which drastically contributed to his victory of 60 percentage points to Hillary Clinton’s 28. The moral of this story? If you’re able to vote, then vote- the voices of millennials do matter, to the point where we can change the tide of this election season if we choose to. You can register to vote in US elections here, and if you’d like to vote for Bernie, you can register to do so here. SUPER TUESDAY IS TOMORROW.
