fuckyeahlesbianliterature: iowawomensarchives: Jo Rabenold, a political activist from Iowa City, collected many feminist and LGBTQ publications from around the U.S. and Canada in the 1970s and 80s, including Iowa City’s own Better Homes & Dykes. In honor of LGBTQ Pride Month, we’ve chosen to feature some of our favorite covers. Although lighthearted, they represent the uncrushable spirit of a community that refuses to be silent. To find out more about LGBTQ activism in Iowa, you can read any of the following collection guides. Or if you’d like to pick out your own favorite covers, come visit us at the IWA! [image description: 4 magazine covers. The first is Lesbian/Lesbienne Vol 1, No 1, Aug ‘79-Dec ’80, which has a cartoon of a friendly-looking, grandmotherly woman smiling while leaning out behind a curtain and saying “Lesbians are everywhere! / Les lesbiennes sont partout!” The second is Betters Homes & Dykes Sept 81 showing an illustration of the queen sitting on a throne inside an arcade, with a sign in the background saying “Singles! Please be considerate of those waiting.” It is titled “The Royal Issue”. The third is The Leaping Lesbian: Summer Vol 3, No 3. (Ann Arbor, Michigan. A bi-monthly magazine.) It has a black-and-white photo of a cat on the cover and is titled “Special Section: An Exploration of ‘lesbian community’”. Lastly, The Gay Alternative No 10, 1975. It features an illustration of Oscar Wilde with a halo-like effect and is titled “Oscar”] -- source link
