thequintessentialqueer:ayellowbirds:bogleech:Literally every last conservative I’ve ever talked to harps on me about being brainwashed by either CNN or MSNBC.I’ve never actually watched either of them in my entire life and I don’t think I’ve ever read an article that they originally came up with.In fact a great deal of things I complain about are things originally admitted by conservative sources themselves. I don’t need another news source to “brainwash” me against the right wing when the right wing has its own guys saying “we’re so glad Donald Trump is making life harder for gays and here’s how he’s doing it”feels on par with the errors they make in attributing progressive beliefs to endorsement by wealthy radicals or conspiracies; that they can’t believe anyone would support a position if an authority figure hadn’t told them to, because they depend so much on authority figures themselves.at every single anti-fascist counter demo I have attended where we’re there to oppose a white supremacist presence, I’ve had multiple right wing people accuse me of being backed by soros. I don’t know who the fuck soros is. several of them have also tried to tear down “your liberal hero justin trudeau” as a way of “owning” us. as a leftist committed to decolonization, I despise trudeau and all his anti-Indigenous, pro-pipeline, neoliberal bullshit. I don’t protest injustice or stand up for other marginalized people because some authority figure told me to. my commitment is to community, not to some rich guy or news source. but the right literally cannot conceive of a movement or ideology not centered around or led by a powerful authority figure. they can’t imagine that a group of young queer and trans people, many of us racialized, would come out in opposition to an anti-muslim, anti-immigrant, anti-Indigenous, anti-semitic rally without being paid and/or brainwashed. they don’t seem to comprehend the possibility of a genuine commitment to justice and solidarity, or a desire to help and support marginalized peoples, whether or not we belong to the groups in question. they don’t understand that I’m not a leftist because I’m being paid to be, or because I was brainwashed by my post-secondary education, or because I admire some particular figure or watch the CBC, or even because of reading marx and other communist theory; I’m a leftist because I care about other people, and the environment, and the world. it’s really that fucking simple. -- source link
