In keeping with the theme of Something to Say, our public art activation on the museum plaza and in the lobby until June 30, 2019, the library has chosen two artist books whose artists play with text, language, and typography to communicate their ideas.Sometimes called the first modern day artist book, Depero Futurista, used groundbreaking typographical experiments and was described by F.T. Marinetti as “a typographical racing car.” Depero Futurista was created in 1927 by the Italian artist Fortunato Depero, part of the futurist movement. Originally only 1,000 copies were printed but in 2017, the 90th anniversary of the publication, Designers & Books published the first exact facsimile, bolts and all. Yes, we said bolts. Depero described it as “Mechanical: bolted like an engine, dangerous: can be used as a projectile, unclassifiable: cannot be placed alongside other books in the library.” The Brooklyn Museum Library and Archives has a copy of this monumental facsimile and, like the works featured in Something to Say, Depero used his skills with language and art to communicate his thoughts on art movements and styles, politics, and even his plan to reconstruct the universe.Fred Cray is a Brooklyn-based artist known for hiding his photographs in unexpected places all over the city. His photos have been found in merchandise at Bergdorf Goodman, New York Public Library, taquerias, delis, utility boxes, police cars, and anywhere else you can think of—over 32,000 photographs so far. Cray experiments with double exposures and superimposing images which can add hidden meanings. “Putting one photo over another adds depth and time, it adds experience and richness.” So in his book Conversations, in which photographs of text are layered and interwoven with the text of a 1960s illustrated book, he is creating an entirely new experience with a new dialogue.
