whilereadingandwalking: The EU recommended recently that all 27 nations reinstate their restrictions on tourists from the US, removing it from a safe list of countries for nonessential travel, because we’re doing so poorly with COVID. (Worth noting that the US hasn’t opened its own borders to EU tourists.) Last week, new COVID-19 cases in the US averaged 152k a day, aka about what it was last January. I’m so exhausted. I know this is the least of the problems fatiguing our world, but I’ve been watching my travel dreams slip out of my fingers as people blatantly ignore advice. I’ve seen friends traveling to Hawaii or jetting off to other countries with no care for local populations. The resentment, that mixture of anger and sadness, burns in the pit of my stomach. Every person who travels now puts all of the travel dreams of the people who are staying safe and keeping others safe at risk. They delay our futures farther out of our grasp. It makes me want to scream into people’s comments. I want to be traveling too. I want to be able to visit my family, or go to a friend’s wedding, without paralyzing fear. I want to complete my dream trips to Spain, to Argentina, to Australia. I want to feel safe. I want to think that my friends and family are safe. You’re not the only one who wants to go, to explore, but to do that, you threw aside communal well-being. You decided that all those things you wanted were more important than the threat you would pose to others. And I just don’t understand that. -- source link
