This is really funny to me - I was doing my last two years at school 79-81, and halfway through it the teachers’ rhetoric went from “you must get good a levels to go to uni to get a good degree to get a good job” to disillusioned diatribes about none of it mattering. And my brother’s friend who got a first at uni ended up on a street sweeping team in Glasgow. His first day on the job he met his fellow sweepers in their tea break shed and found he was the lowest-qualified of them, they were several MAs and a PhD.
