doomandgloomfromthetomb: Ryan Hildebrand - SOUND Bandcamp Monday rolls on – I found this record pretty soothing last week, and I hope it’ll have the same effect for you. Flute loops! Is this what the world needs now? Maybe … Ryan Hildebrand’s SOUND came to me by way of the always-reliable Michael Klausman. Not sure whether this is the same Ryan Hildebrand who has collaborated with Six Organs of Admittance in the past, but it is very possible [update from Ben Chasny: “yes, same Ryan. He’s responsible for the drones on Dark Noontide. He also played in Los Cincos and Volume 11,both great S Cali bands”]. Either way, this is lovely, haunting stuff – spare and skeletal, but still very absorbing. I recommend it. More details: most of this music is based on loops of flute, specifically the shakuhachi, a japanese end-blown bamboo flute. the flutes used range in length from 1.1 shaku (japanese unit of measurement very close to the us foot) to 2.8 shaku in length. the tracks are titled according to which flute was used. R330 = rickenbacker 330, the guitar used on that track. everything came together through a pretty even mix of intuition, chance, and intervention. thanks for listening. -- source link
