todayinhistory:November 1st 1894: Nicholas II becomes TsarOn this day in 1894, Nicholas Romanov became the new Tsar of Russia. Aged 26, Nicholas succeeded to the throne after the death of his father Tsar Alexander III. Nicholas was largely unprepared and inexperienced to lead his country, and his rule saw Russia’s defeat in the Russo-Japanese War and beginning of Russia’s disastrous involvement in World War One. He was known for violent suppression of protests, such as the peaceful 1905 Revolution which was fired upon by imperial troops. He ruled Russia until his abdication on March 2nd 1917, following the Bolshevik Revolution which removed him from power. The Tsar and his family were then imprisoned, and eventually executed by a Bolshevik firing squad in 1918. -- source link
