The unredacted story I was sent by the client.Krivuul was captured by elves in his earlier years as a foot soldier/royal escort during a campaign to take over an eleven country in which he was tasked with escorting a VIP military figure to a safe house off the battle field. His party was intercepted by elves and Krivuul as well as his childhood friend Rhurok left the party to take on the elf ambush, allowing the VIP to safely escape with 4 other dragonborn soldiers. Both Krivuul and Rhurok were tortured and interrogated for 2 years and considered KIA by their clan during that period as the battle they last fought in was one with heavy casualties on both sides, it was assumed they were killed by the elves in the ambush, earning both of them a hero’s funeral. During this period of time the elves killed Rhurok in front of Krivuul as it was let slip that Krivuul was privy to important information Rhurok was not as Krivuul was close friends with the VIP he escorted during a conversation the two held between their cells, not knowing their torturers spoke draconic. With the murder of his friend Krivuul sunk into himself and developed a deep and forgery hatred for the elves torturing him and used that to steel himself during interrogation and torture sessions, refusing to give the elves the satisfaction of hurting him, thus spending the last 18 months of his captivity in silence. The last day he was in captivity the elf torturing him began recounting the hours long process of killing Rhurok while slowly tearing scales from Krivuul’s hide. In this moment he prayed to anyone or anything that was listening to him to send him strength to match his hate, to tear the elf in half and carve his way back home, killing anyone who got in his way, innocent or otherwise. With that The Black Lord Bane smiled upon him, freezing time and appearing as a pale human with black hair and vibrant green eyes which flowed in the dark of the torture chamber, and clad in a coat of black flame. He touched Krivuul’s left shoulder and black flames erupted from it, searing the tenants of Conquest into his upper arm, forever branding him as a Knight of The Black Lord. The words “Remember your promise” rang out in Krivuul’s head and time then unfroze, Bane was gone, but Krivuul was now fully restored, his renewed form barely contained by the restraints that once so easily held his malnourished form. The elf only got a momentary glance to register the changes before Krivuul tore himself from the iron restraints on the table and lunged at his captor, tearing his rib cage apart. Using the keyring from his former torturer as well as a rib, Krivuul was able to pick the locks he needed to in order to exit the dungeon and stealthily dispatch of the few roaming guards patrolling the small dungeon where he was kept until he finally stumbled across the familiar trapdoor leading to the surface. Upon exiting the trapdoor and entering the small shack that served to cover it as well as house the guards as to make the presence of a secret torture cell unknown, Krivuul armed himself with arms and armor he found in the guards personal chests after stabbing one of the two sleeping guards and strangling the other. Krivuul knew he couldn’t be far from the battlefield as he was conscious for the trip from the ambush to the dungeon. The elves used a spell to paralyze him and Rhurok instead of attempting to kill them both. Meaning he was at most an hour’s ride away from the spot of the ambush and maybe 2 to the nearest operational dragonborn base. Using his memory to follow the very much changed landmarks and guided by strange forces, possibly instinct, maybe it was Bane, he didn’t know, Krivuul found his way into the arms of his fellow soldiers after stumbling into camp and catching an bolt from a trigger happy guard. Finally Krivuul was safe. Until recent events (whatever will decides Krivuul meets with the party etc) Krivuul has been working as a mercenary for a local merc guild and worships at his neighborhood friendly Banite church. Krivuul is a very gruff and blunt individual, he’s not necessarily rude but he certainly comes off as coarse. Deep down he’s a good person with skewed morals, years of combat and torture have definitely given him a much more grey outlook on life but Krivuul, as brutal as he is, has rules. He will not harm the innocent or the weak should they comply with his will or at the very least offer no violent resistance. He certainly will not engage in nefarious deeds under the watchful eye of the law, but outside of the law’s field of vision, Krivuul feels he is free to do as he pleases. Krivuul is a very confident and accomplished warrior and leader, but might at times, become envious of other’s great deeds, seeking to surpass them. Hes also been tempted to bully those he sees as weak simply because he can, though it would be abuse of his power, which is something he isn’t capable of doing do without multiple repercussions, although he wouldn’t receive legitimate punishment from his leadership, everyone whose seen Krivuul knows that isn’t exactly an option. Aside from that the repercussions including breaking his own code of ethics which he sees as the ultimate transgression against himself. -- source link
