b-editions: I’ll start this letter by saying it wasn’t easy to write it. I’ve been thinking about doing this for some time now, but I always end up wondering “why, exactly?”. The intention is not that the person to which this is dedicated reads it, because that’s certainly impossible. I believe this is like venting… That’s right, this is me venting. It’s probably an ordinary letter that any fan would write to their idol, but I feel like I need to express these words, especially today. These words are dedicated to Benedict Cumberbatch, a brilliant and talented professional, husband, father and an amazing idol. It’s not easy to write about a person who I haven’t met, who I’ve never even had the opportunity to talk to. Everything I know, I know thanks to interviews and comments from people who had the opportunity to meet him. Anyway, I dare say that he is a human being with a huge heart, always ready to help and to do good, and that fills me with pride. I’m going to spare you all from this turning into a gigantic letter reminiscing about how I became his fan but know that I’m grateful for that day and that opportunity. Getting to know the works of such a magnificent actor is truly something to be thankful for. I fell in love for two characters (I’m looking at you, Stephen Strange and Sherlock Holmes!), but I also fell in love with a great talent. So many characters, so many works and in each and every one of them Benedict knocks it out of the park. If someday he had to play the role of a rock, don’t doubt he’d be the most beautiful and amazing rock of all, and he’d win all the awards for it! However, everyone already knows about how talented he is. It’s visible. So, actually, I’m here to say what a lot of people would consider an exaggeration, others wouldn’t even understand, and others would certainly relate. I’m here to say that I’m proud to say I’m a fan of Benedict Cumberbatch. And believe me, it’s not easy to just say that and then don’t say anything else. I feel the need to say why and every little detail about how it is to be a fan of such an incredible person. Watching any work of his makes me ecstatic, like I could always think “he got at his talent’s peak!” and even then, realize he didn’t, because he still has a whole lot to show. Watching his earlier works makes me think about how much has changed since then, and how talent was already a part of his life that early. I’ve emphasized how beautiful he is on the inside, but his beauty on the outside is certainly breathtaking. I mean, how can somebody get even more charming and handsome throughout the years? There’s still some time to go, but I’m already scared of how it’s going to be when he’s 50 years old. Dear God, we won’t be able to handle it! Back to the point, I just want to go on record and say how good it is to be a fan of a person who’s always indirectly making me smile. Whether if it is through a picture, a video or any other way I can get in contact with. Whether if it is to cry for one of his characters or to laugh at his jokes during interviews. Benedict may not read this, but I hope, somehow, he can feel the love and pride that I and all of his fans feel for him. I also hope that the people who don’t know him or know a little can know more of him in order to admire this brilliant human being. I hope you have a happy day, Benedict. Accompanied by your family, your friends and all the people lucky to have you by their side. But I don’t wish you these things only for today. I wish that you’ll be happy, like I am being one of the million fans you have across the world. I hope someday I can tell you all these words in person. Today I don’t celebrate just the day the world had the privilege to having you as a part of it, but I also celebrate having the opportunity to getting to know you and being mesmerized by your personality and your work. I know your biggest accomplishment is having a wonderful family, but I hope to see many great accomplishments more. Much of the road has already been traveled, and I will be here to applaud you.
