The M1893 Skoda Machine Gun,Invented by Grand Duke Karl Salvator and Colonel von Dormus of Austria, the Skoda machine gun was inspired by the earlier Maxim machine gun, the first true machine gun invented. It operated through the use of a recoil pivoted breechblock, with the recoil of each shot throwing back the breechblock, ejecting a cartridge, and then feeding a new one. Oddly, it was fed from a top mounted hopper in which loose cartridges (6.5mm - 11mm) were loaded by hand and fed with the force of gravity. Unfortunately the Skoda was not the best design, suffering from malfunctions due to dust and dirt. It was also heavy and immobile, for the most part relegated to use mounted on turrets for fixed defenses or naval use. The machine gun was adopted by the Austro-Hungarian Army and Navy, but very few ever saw combat. -- source link
