james-boswell-illustration: I’ve never shared this story until now, but it’s something I think about quite frequently, a lot of this i remember vividly, but I had to call my dad to clear up some details. When I was a kid growing up in the east midlands in the 90’s it was always the biggest treat on a thursday after swimming to be taken to the local fast food restaurant (a burger joint). I was allowed, for about three quid, to get whatever I liked from the menu, which almost always meant I’d get whatever came with a cheap plastic toy. One night while we were eating our meal, sitting in the usual spot by the window, we noticed two emaciated figures scuffling on the other side of the car park, neither seemed to have the upper hand so we were inclined to just sit and watch, I think my parents thought that it would teach me some sort of valuable lesson. The two figures remained fighting for the duration of the meal, and were still at it when we left. The next week when we returned they were at it again, with no loss of effort, but equally no real harm being done to either combatant. as it was a nice warm evening we opted to sit outside, where we could get a better view. It was when we got a bit closer that we recognised who both of the figures were, none other than superstar Canadian director James Cameron and his Co-writer on the 1995 smash hit Strange Days, Jay Cocks. it appeared that they were squabbling over some small glowing object and and shouting incoherently, making these odd barking sounds. When the time came to head back home I looked over to see them falling to the floor in a fit of particularly explosive yelling and assumed that that one of them must have finally won their week long battle. They were there the week after, and the week after that. One week we had to go swimming on a wednesday as we were off on holiday to Rhodes early the next morning, and stopping by the burger restaurant for dinner we saw them at it again, still wrestling in the same spot, illuminated by a single street lamp in the increasing dark. The first Thursday after our holiday I was eager to see how the fight had progressed, barely able to concentrate on my swimming lessons, we raced over to the restaurant, but pulling into the car park there was no sign of the combatants. we had a quick look around to see if they had moved during the struggle, but they had gone. Later that year Titanic came out, grossing more than $1.84 billion worldwide, remaining the highest grossing film until Cameron himself surpassed it in 2009 with Avatar. Anyway these are some illustrations of fast food that I drew that remind me of that restaurant. WEBSITE BLOG -- source link
