This garnet necklace with gold fly amulets dates to the 18th Dynasty (1470-1350 BCE). Fly amulets emerged during the late Predynastic, and are seen throughout the New Kingdom. The initial symbolism of such amulets is debated–but golden flies certainly possessed esteemed significance during the New Kingdom. Gold flies were given to those who assisted in espousing Hyksos rulers from the Egyptian throne, perhaps as a token of persistence. After some time, it is likely that these amulets’ military significance was compromised–as they were later awarded for success in an array of fields, and may have been linked to fertility (possibly an even earlier function of the amulet) as well.
