herbrarium:Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana)A bird cherry that produces small red to black fruits that are about 1 cm in diameter. The fruit is astringent, but edible, and can be used to make jams, jellies, or wines. All other parts of the plant (leaves, bark, twigs, seeds) are poisonous and contain cyanogenic compounds. Due to its toxicity, it is not recommended to grow where livestock can access it.These plants are native throughout North America and are useful for creating wind breaks in order to reduce wind erosion. They are very cold hardy, growing in USDA plant hardiness zones 2 through 7.08/20/16 - Hewlett Gulch Trail, COIf you’re planting Prunus species, be aware that Prunus virginiana can harbor all manner of pests. P. virginiana can handle them, many of the more domesticated / delicious species cannot. We have one next to our small but growing orchard that we’re going to have to remove. -- source link
