audreydoeskaren:Chinese fashion ca. 1840With this one I went back in time to the late Daoguang era with an aoku (robe and pants) outfit. Collars were still kind of medium height at this time, being able to accommodate two buttons. The popular look around this time seems to be an outer robe with shorter sleeves, showing the tight fitting sleeves of the undershirt. The decorations are surprisingly scarce, the only embroidery being at the hems of the pants (I can’t really make out the pattern from the painting so I had to abstract a bit…) Because of the lack of embroidery (which thickens the fabric), clothes of this era were still very flowy and decidedly not structured, unlike that of the second half of the 19th century. Shoes for bound feet commonly had white wedge heels and overlapping stockings. The hair is very interesting, transitioning from the tall Apollo knots of the 1820s and 30s into the more horizontal style of the 50s (not exact dates, just my approximations). I heard somewhere that Apollo knots in 1830s Western fashion was inspired by the contemporary Chinese style, could someone fill me in? Using flowers both real and artificial to adorn hair had a long tradition in China and was present in basically every era. Again the reference image here:Source here -- source link
