The verdict is clear: our followers do not like the new pedestrian overpass in front of Myanma Port Authority. While some would have preferred a different location for it, others say it should have been realized as an underpass instead. However, such measures are more expensive, not the least given the high groundwater and swampy ground conditions in this part of the city. Perhaps at some point in the future, this visual detraction from the beautiful Strand promenade can be replaced with something else. However, as Graham Lewis notes below, the most important issue now is the amount of traffic passing along Strand Road: how can this be reconciled with the intention to turn the waterfront into a public space? Sink the road (and encounter the same ground conditions)? Elevate the road (some have even floated the idea of a flyover)? Discourage traffic, e.g. by increasing public transport (the recently opened tram going into this direction) and in the long term closing down the port? These are the questions city planners have to grapple with, and their decisions will be crucial for Yangon’s future. -- source link
