strawberrypatty:I was reading an interview from Robert Kirkman, writer of The Walking Dead comic and one of the producers of the television series.Specifically, he was talking about the character of Daryl Dixon. For those of you who don’t know, Daryl— a rebel, reckneck hunter— is the most popular character in the television series. Chris Hardwick (host of The Talking Dead) has joked many times about how the most frequent question he gets is whether Daryl is going to die or not. There are plenty of fans who want Rick to die and for Daryl to take over the lead role in the series. As it is, he’s already arguably the second most prominent character. Here’s the thing: Daryl isn’t in the original comics.Daryl is a completely original character to the television series. Despite the comic continuing on to this day, Robert Kirkman has said outright Daryl will NEVER appear in the comics. Specifically, he had this quote:I like that Daryl is the element of the show that is an agent of change, that really affects every story as we try to adapt them. The Walking Dead television series is different from the comics in many ways. But in a lot of ways, they are the same. Some characters have died that are still around, some died earlier, some have survived when they should have already perished. But most of the storybeats are the same. There is a reverence paid to the source material, down to some shots being taken directly from the comics. This makes me think about Sherlock. How people try to cling to the original canon in terms of characters that will live and die (Hello, Miss Mary). And then we have a character like Molly. Some have claimed that Molly can’t be that much of an important character, because she’s not in the original Arthur Conan Doyle canon. But can we really say that? Can’t a character introduced in a new medium be just as important as any other? Can’t Molly be— as Daryl Dixon is— an Agent of Change, something that sets this adaptation apart from any other? -- source link
