lady-redshield-writes: I used to be so terrified of my writing being filled with tropes that I spent hours reading TV Tropes and thinking, “okay, I can’t do this. I can’t do this either. I thought this was cool, but looks like it’s a trope, so I can’t do it either.” It took me years to get over that and realize that tropes are just tools, like anything else in writing. Sure, it might have been done before. But you’ve never done it. And how you do it might be the best it’s ever been done. Recognising tropes is hugely improtant! Not to destroy them all with extreme prejudice, as most english/lit teachers would advise, but to focus on and improve it.Tropes exist because they have a kernel of truth (bear in mind this does NOT go for hurtful stereotypes! People are people!) You just need to shake that trope up, give it some new heat, and make it POP!Because the same old, same old gets boring, fast. A fresh take on an old trope, especially when it subverts the readers’ expectations? That’s the drug that keeps people coming back for more. -- source link
