The photo shoot was a lot of fun and Alex is relieved that Naomi is now relaxed and smiling, helped along by several glasses of champagne. She seems to like Audrey, who is after all very well-respected in her field and unfailingly polite and professional. At least to her subjects’ faces. Now they have convened to the kitchen for Naomi’s interview. Audrey places the digital voice recorder on the counter between them. She tells Naomi to try and forget it’s there. She gives Naomi her warmest and most trustworthy smile.“Why don’t we start by talking about your formative years, Naomi? What kind of an upbringing did you have?”Naomi’s voice is a velvety contralto, low and melodious. Alex thinks: You know you’re fucked when even their voice gives you a hard-on. She describes a privileged childhood with her older sister Valentina in Monte Vista, where her father owned and operated the township’s busiest cinema. Her mother didn’t have to work but liked to dabble in painting and drawing. Then when Naomi was fifteen tragedy struck. Her father was in the projection room late one night, alone, long after the last patrons had left for the evening, trying to fix the machine responsible for rewinding the movie reels. A fire started by a short circuit somewhere and her father was overcome by smoke and fumes. He died before he could find the exit door. Alex feels queasy. He should know better than to drink champagne on an empty stomach.“Oh my God,” says Audrey. “How absolutely hideous. Are you okay? Do you want to stop for a little while?” “No,” says Naomi after a pause, “It was a long time ago. I’m fine. Really. I’m happy to continue.” -- source link
