ON THIS DAY: JUNE 8.Natural disasters have occurred throughout the ages, from the earliest years of Earth’s history. Although many prehistoric natural disasters have gone unrecorded, there is an outstanding number of natural disasters that have found their place into our history books, gleaned from eyewitness reports, early religious and historical literature, and evidence revealed by modern-day scientists. Throughout each month I will be sharing “On this day” posts about past geological events and natural disasters in history.On this day: June 8, 1783VOLCANO ICELANDThe Icelandic volcano Laki was thought to be dormant until 1783 when it suddenly came to life with devastating effect.So much vegetation was destroyed by Laki’s rain of volcanic ash that more than 200,000 sheep, horses, and cattle starved to death. Thousands of human deaths from famine occurred the following winter, the volcanic eruption was often blamed for this, however new research suggests that this extreme winter was triggered from other natural climate variability.Ash and noxious fumes continued to spew into the air for almost eight months after the initial eruption.*I know many of you wonderful bunch of followers are a wealth of knowledge, so if anyone knows of any other events that have happened “on this day” above, please share with the rest of us in the comments below.
