ClinozoisiteA close relative of the mineral we know more commonly as Tanzanite (seehttp://tinyurl.com/m2kotqd) with whom it shares half its name and membership in the epidote group. It forms during bursts of metamorphism of calcium rich rocks or granitic intrusion, when rocks are baked and crushed into forming new minerals in equilibrium with the new conditions. Metamorphism is classified by temperature pressure conditions, based on the minerals formed as one rock turns into another, and these indicator minerals tell us about the travels of a patch of rock up and down in the crust as it is buried, exhumed or crushed in a mountain building event. Those formed in granite baked rocks occur in formations known as skarns, formed by interactions between heat, fluids expelled from the granite and carbonate rocks that host the new pluton. Common colours include green, colourless and grey. Prisms such as this one are common, and of often striated down their length. This specimen comes from Pakistan and measures 4x2cm.LozImage credit: Quebul Fine Minerals -- source link
