1979-1990 Anime PrimerBubblegum Crisis (1987)In 2032, the dystopian future capital of MegaTokyo is under the corrupt thumb of the multi-million dollar conglomerate Genom Corp. The company is famous for creating Boomers, mass-produced biomechanics with a nasty habit of going berserk. The AD Police are having trouble keeping the mad machines in check when a group of power suit-clad lady vigilantes known as the Knight Sabers arrive on the scene. Each woman has her own reasons for wanting to see Genom fall and will stop at nothing to scrub the city’s dirty underbelly squeaky clean.Bubblegum Crisis is a neon-colored, pop-infused cyberpunk vision strongly influenced by American media such as Blade Runner, Streets of Fire and The Terminator. Slated to run for 12 episodes, it unfortunately never went past 8, but what was produced makes for some very entertaining viewing. Highlights include cute girls designed by Kenichi Sonoda (Gall Force, Gunsmith Cats), kinetic animation and a fantastic soundtrack, featuring most memorably the hard-rocking number Tonight, A Hurricane performed by lead character Priss (Kinuko Oomori) and her band, The Replicants.Bubblegum Crisis is available on remastered DVD or Blu-ray from AnimEigo. -- source link
