Melusine or Melusina was a legendary noblewoman in 12th century Brittany who fled her family when it was discovered that she was a fabulous creature who reverted to her natural form when wet. There are many variations of the story, and of Melusine’s monstrous anatomy. She usually has the lower body of either a fish or a snake. Howe’s rendition looks like a compromise between the two. -- source link
