Zoie Ghika, Moldavian Princess (1777). Alexander Roslin (Swedish, 1718-1793). Oil on canvas. Nationalmuseum. The Moldovan princess Zoie Ghika lived as a refugee in Russia, and Roslin seems to have chosen to portray her in an unusually natural way, without the coiffures and makeup that is usually associated with the 18th century. The princess’ costume is picturesque and outside of the fashion of the day. This is a perfect example of Roslin’s precise, direct, but delicately sensual style; as usual, the description of the details - fabric, lace, fur, ribbon - is exquisite. -- source link
