Saint George was born in Cappadocia (modern day Turkey) to a Greek father & a Palestinian mother. At age 14 George moved to Syria & joined the Roman army becoming a high-ranking officer, member of the Praetorian Guard of emperor Diocletian. When the emperor started his persecutions against the Christians, Saint George declared himself to be a Christian & was decapitated. What would George would have made of many xenophobic nationalists invoking his name as patron saint of England? Most importantly, If George the persecuted Syrian was seeking refugee status in the UK today, would we have taken him in?Happy St. Georges Day. -- source link
