Baroque master Peter Paul Rubens died on this day in 1640. Hanging in our collection on Level 1, “The Massacre of the Innocents” illustrates a story from the New Testament: the massacre of all boys under the age of two in Bethlehem. The artist pits the senselessly brutal and powerful soldiers of King Herod against the fierce mothers and women, protecting their sons in vain. Rubens used figures and poses from famous ancient statues, imbuing the remains of antiquity with violent and energetic unity.
