gffa:gffa:OH MY GOD AT ALL OF THIS. It’s just so completely Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader, all of this hate and anger and obsession over Obi-Wan and the Jedi. That he’s such an asshole, someone who picks up his troopers to use them as literal human shields before tossing them aside when he’s done, someone who will kill a trooper just for having seen his face or knowing his name (both in this comic and the Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith comic), that he tries so hard to be terrifying, to be casual about how murderous he is–”I’ve killed very many fathers, you’ll have to be more specific.”–and yet, when it comes down to it, as soon as Obi-Wan is involved with anything, this guy just becomes obsessed.Darth Vader tries to pretend that he doesn’t care (tries so hard to pretend so many things, tries to pretend that he doesn’t want to die every single minute of the day pretty much, tries to pretend that it was everyone else who betrayed him, tries to pretend that the dark side was worth it, tries to pretend he had no other choices but the ones he made), but underneath that, this is Anakin Skywalker. And he cares so very, very much.He even cares about how Luke isn’t even worthy of being a Jedi. This guy who shouldn’t care about the Jedi, who shouldn’t care about an untrained young man, still comes across as insulted that someone so unworthy would call themselves a Jedi. And, boy, as soon as he realizes this was who Obi-Wan was protecting, Vader CANNOT LET IT GO. He tries so hard to be dismissive, “He never was much of a Master.” Well, if that were true (and it’s not, because it’s just another thing Vader is trying so hard to pretend is true because he’s so angry and cares so much) then he shouldn’t care about this young man in front of him. But Obi-Wan cared about this young man and so Anakin has to have him, has to ruin him. Because Obi-Wan cared about him. Because Anakin has to prove–even now that Obi-Wan is dead! Vader killed him himself!–that the dark was worth it, the dark is better, that he doesn’t care, that he’ll ruin everything Obi-Wan loved, because he’s so angry at Obi-Wan. And Vader’s so angry at him because, underneath all of that, he cares so, so much about Obi-Wan Kenobi.Because he knows that Obi-Wan was usually right about most things–so if he had this young man as his last great hope, well, then maybe Vader can start to see the potential he has. He can see the things this young man is managing to pull off, even as untrained as he is. Maybe he was too hasty to dismiss him. But all those times he talks to someone he doesn’t think is there? All those times he thinks about Obi-Wan unprompted? Vader’s interest in Luke is sparked because, oh, he’s still just as obsessed with Obi-Wan as he ever was, in that same complicated, “I hate you because I loved you, because some part of me still loves you, because I know on some level what I did to you was wrong, because I know you would hate me with good reason, because you know me and I can’t let anyone, ANYONE know the real me anymore.” And that’s underscored by the trooper he kills just for seeing his face. It’s underscored by how Dave Filoni talks about the reason Obi-Wan and Ahsoka can’t reach Vader is because they know who he is, only Luke can because their relationship is a blank slate, there’s a potential for something that’s not tangled up in the past. And all of that plays out beautifully with this comic.EVEN IN THE DARTH VADER ISSUE MEANT TO BE READ ALONGSIDE IT, THERE’S STILL YET MORE OF VADER BEING LIKE, “BUT ALL OF THAT (his saber, his memories, his Obi-Wan) IS MINE–!!” and his attention is caught on and grabbed because of Obi-Wan.I also like how he entirely bypasses his usual ANAKIN SKYWALKER IS DEAAAAAAD thing when his brain is pretty scrambled because OBI-WAN OBI-WAN OBI-WAN WHAT ARE YOU DOING OBI-WAN OBI-WAN OBI-WAAAAN WHY AREN’T YOU PAYING ATTENTION TO ME ANYMORE OBI-WAN WHY DID YOU DIE FOR SOMEONE ELSE OBI-WAAAAAAN IF I MAKE HIM MINE THEN YOU’LL HAVE TO SEE ME AND PAY ATTENTION TO ME OBI-WAN!!11!I’m yelling about it in a hyperbolic way for my own amusement, but there’s truth in there as well, because Vader absolutely cared about Obi-Wan and missed him underneath all that rage and fear, badly enough that Yoda senses it from halfway across the galaxy:Yet again: Vader’s so angry at him because, underneath all of that, he cares so, so much about Obi-Wan Kenobi. -- source link
